MISSING IN ACTION: The Cowboys have been hit hard by Origin involvement, losing Johnathan Thurston, Matt Scott, James Tamou and Brent Tate to their respective state sides. Into the squad comes Kalifa Faifai Loa, Michael Morgan, Scott Bolton, Jason Taumalolo and Cory Paterson, with the latter three named on an extended bench. Another of the players named on the bench – forward Ricky Thorby – remains in doubt with a rib injury.
Blues Origin duo Luke Lewis and Michael Jennings will be missing from the Panthers’ line up, while half-back Luke Walsh is a slight chance of taking his place, despite not being named due to a knee injury. The Panthers have three players out indefinitely – Nathan Smith (broken leg), Michael Gordon (broken ankle) and Junior Tia Kilifi (ankle), while hard-hitting forward Nigel Plum (bicep) is still a couple of months away from a return. Cameron Ciraldo returns from injury to replace Lewis in the back-row.
FORM: The Cowboys have racked up 128 points over the past month, including their impressive 32-12 dismantling of the underperforming Newcastle Knights at Hunter Stadium last Saturday night. With their big names firing, the Cowboys emerged from a deadlocked first half to rack up 20 unanswered points after the break and win comfortably. They remain in fourth on the ladder and are looking as strong as ever.
The Panthers broke a five-match losing streak last Monday night against the Dragons, but it was far from plain sailing despite holding a 12-0 lead for a fair portion of the game. The Dragons scored two tries in the final 12 minutes of regulation time to take the game into golden point, when full-back Lachlan Coote finally sealed the deal for the hosts in the 84th minute, courtesy of a pressure field goal. They have a long way to go to get back into top-eight contention, but at least that horrible losing habit has been broken.
